Joseph Mangan, an aerospace engineer from Kansas, USA, was recruited in September 2003 to lead the aerospace team at TTTech Computertechnik, a firm in Austria that supplies Airbus components. He noticed and warned of a small but potentially lethal fault in the new A380 super-jumbo. He informed the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), that the cabin pressure system in the A380 might not be safe, and that a defect in the outflow valve control system could lead to an abrupt loss of cabin pressure, an occurrence that could in turn leave passengers unconscious in about 20 seconds.
He observed that it would take over two minutes to bring the aircraft down to the survival altitude of 25,000 feet or a worst, the plane could crash. He claimed that TTTech falsely classified its micro-chip as a simple “off-the-shelf” product already used in car valves in order to except it from elaborate testing rules. Additionally, the A380 uses glass laminates for the plane’s fuselage. Whether this material could degrade under violet radiation had not been conclusively established. The company had concealed all this information. The company denied all claims, sacked him and sued him in court for defamation. Mr Mangan was served with a gag order by a court in Vienna to which he retorted – “They say I can’t even talk to safety officials about a threat to safety. This violates my duty to the public. People could die on that plane if they don’t fix the problem,” he said. A probe – conducted by the French authorities for EASA – confirmed the allegations and Airbus was instructed to rectify the problem. For speaking out on a matter of safety, Engineer Mangan suffered a bit. There was neither a whistle blowing mechanism nor protection for whistle blowers in Austria.
